Home: Takeley House
Winner: "Best of Show"
1997 Park City Area Parade of Homes
Not many houses get a second chance, but Takeley Barn has really
moved up in the world. The original construction took place around the
year 1650, in the town of Takeley, England. This solid oak, post and
beam structure was dismantled and shipped to Utah. It remained in
storage until owners Mike and Kathy Lee found the time and
opportunity to turn it into a unique mountain home. In March of 1996,
the antique barn frame was erected over a traditionally constructed
foundation and walkout lower level. Next, a shell was built around it
and a garage wing added, to house a few modern conveniences. The
barn frame remains entirely exposed on the inside but vestiges also
remain outside the main entry. Large windows now capture panoramic
views of the Park City and Deer Valley ski resorts, as well as Park
Meadows and beyond. Spare antique oak has been used to help tie
the old to the new. Period oak plank doors were created by the owner,
who happened to be a woodworking hobbyist. When completed, the
home turned out to be approximately 6,000 square.ft. with 4
Bedrooms, 4 Bathrooms and a three car garage.
